The Fossil Gorge

Our good friends, Meredith, Charlie, and Emily introduced us to the Devonian Fossil Gorge near the Coraville Dam.  This attraction was created by the flood of 1993 when the floodwaters topped the emergency spillway and further expanded after it happened again during the flood of 2008.  The water washed away tons of soil, trees, and road as well.  When the water receded, the 375-million-year-old fossilized Devonian ocean floor was revealed.  If you're interested, you can read more here:

The kids had the best time climbing rocks, hopping over puddles, looking for fossils, and literally getting stuck in the mud!

Thanks friends!  We have plans to go back and introduce Paul to our new adventure spot!  ;)

Easter

Ruby was so excited to wave palm branches for Palm Sunday.  The kids sang and did a great job.

We celebrated Easter with Paul's family on Palm Sunday as well.

The annual egg hunt was a success ;)

Five Van Heukelom grandchildren

Annie made us giggle after supper as she went to the kids' plates and scavenged off of them.

We were able to travel to Sibley for the Easter weekend.  We picked up Hattie who flew into the Cedar Rapids airport.  Annie was not interested in napping therefore making an interesting five hour ride to Sibley.

So excited to see my sister!

Late night snuggles with my new nephew, Palmer

Uncle Kenny and Annie

Aunt Hattie's idea to dye eggs!  The kids loved it!

There is a new hotel in Sibley, not far from my parent's house.  Kenny, Hattie, and I took the three big kids swimming one morning.  I'm pretty sure each of them jumped in at least 50 times.

Paul kept teasing the kids by asking them if they wanted to share an oreo with him... and then he'd give them the part with no cream.

Then it was Jace's turn to get him back!

Not the baby anymore!

My parents host Easter at their house every year.  This year there were 25 kids for the egg hunt!
And I think we counted 53 altogether.

The weekend wore them out!

Winter Wrap-Up

Our local mall has an ice-skating rink and Ruby had wanted to go for so long.  We finally found a time to take Ruby and Jace, while Paul's parents could watch Annie on the sidelines.

Jace's time on the rink was short-lived.  He had fun but when Papa asked if he'd rather ride the carousel, he quickly chose that option.  Which made less work for me!

Ruby had a blast and enjoyed her time alone with both parents.  She definitely needed assistance but was stronger at the end than when she started.

We picked up Lauren from preschool one day and spent the rest of the afternoon together!

And I got a taste of twins one morning when we watched our neighbor's little guy for a few hours.  He is just a few weeks younger than Annie.  And so cute!

Holiday Lights parade in Cedar Rapids

Ruby and her friend, Clara

Plenty of snow fun...including sledding in Williamsburg!

Bowling night with the Visser's!  Jace's first time bowling!

And Annie's too!  Strapped into the baby bjorn did not fair well for our score, but we still had fun!

Ruby and her friend, Charlie, at Pinocchio

Playdate with Ruby's friend, Faith

Lots of play dates with our neighbor friend, Kenzie

Ruby's special helper day at preschool

Annie's first Valentine's Day!

Ruby participated in Pee Wee Basketball for the first time and made vast improvements from the first practice to the last!

Fun evening with the Kallemeyn's and Visser's!

Jace spelled his name for the first time!!

A beautiful March day!

Spring Break!
We watched our neighbor boy, Holden, for two days!

St. Patrick's Day parade in Cedar Rapids...not exactly spring weather yet!

Sydney got to spend the night over Spring Break

Lots of March Madness watching... our little Hawkeye lover ;)

Hills Bank Ag Day
Jace was enamored by this bearded dragon.  He kept going back to touch him.

Walking in the "woods" behind our house has become a new favorite.

No sheds but we found a small skull... probably a raccoon we decided.  ;)

Now, come on Spring!
